Monica M. Brinkman believes in stories worth telling. A poet
at heart, she delved into novel writing when it became apparent this was yet
another venue to bring readers entertainment along with opening minds and
hearts to books that hold much meaning and thought, long after the read was
completed.
A member of The Missouri Writers Guild, Writers Center, former
Columnist for Authors Info, Ms. Brinkman received the reward of one of the best
books of 2011 via Readers Choice. The
highly rated reviews of The Turn of the Karmic Wheel, embrace both her

genetic disease Epidermolysis Bullosa, Ms. Brinkman donates a portion of all

Having read "The Turn of the Karmic Wheel," I am looking forward to Monica's next book, which should be out this spring. As her co-host on It Matters Radio, I get to talk frequently with this wonderful woman. My personal guess is that her next life will be as a golden retriever—yeah, that loving and kind. I am also very proud to have included Monica in the writers' blog I organized, The Write Room Blog. The most amazing thing about our friendship, we have never met in person. You may never meet her either, but I guarantee that you'll love her.

DeleteHaving known Monica for many years, I was not surprised at her"Turn" to writing and hosting It Matters Radio show. We were in an acting class together, and performed plays and even a few musicals together. She's positive, creative, and works hard to present a quality radio show! I feel privileged to know her, call her a great friend! I look eagerly forward to her new book, a sequel to Turn of the Karmic Wheel. My only question for Monica is, What's Next?!

DeleteI often wonder how other authors get their ideas for a story. Where do they come from? In dreams? Observing others? An object? Would love to hear.
ReplyDeleteOne of my books did come from a dream. My first series was inspired by the foster kids I worked with. They were so wonderful! How do your ideas come to you?
DeleteI have some 'yet to be written' that have come from dreams and those that have been written from a nagging need to express how much we do touch each others lives without even knowing it. This need to create a good story that will not only entertain, but also will make people think a bit. So what stories have come from dreams? Do you have the dream over and over until you write the story?
DeleteI have only had the one and it was the beginning of the book. She's homeless and cold. It seemed that the book flowed after that. Do you write down your dreams so you have the notes for later?
DeleteI have no idea. They just appear. Sometimes I feel like the most important part of the creative process is to turn off my brain. No where did I put that thing. Gray, about yea big. Wait, Punky, don't play with that.

DeleteKen, like you, I have never met Monica in person! But what an extraordinary person she seems to be. I enjoyed being her guest and yours on It Matters Radio. Judging by her support of EBMRF and other activities, her Turn of the Karmic Wheel is a good one, and I will have to put that book on my To Do list before the sequel comes out. DeleteEven though I don't know much about Monica, anyone who writes to "open minds and hearts to books that hold much meaning and thought" has my vote. I hope we'll get better acquainted in 2015, maybe even collaborate on a project that addresses an injustice (of which there are so many in our world)!

DeleteMonica, can you tell us how you got the idea for your book? How long did it take you to write it? What inspires you?
ReplyDeleteThroughout my life I saw so many people who were kind, caring, giving, loving and yet they made small wages, lived from paycheck to paycheck or worse. I wanted to show them that each act of kindness touched others lives in ways they would never know. And, at the same time, I wished to bring hope and joy and pride to those who deserved it.
DeleteOn the other hand, I also wanted to show that evil is not always 100%; that people may act poorly, selfishly and be self-absorbed due to many factors. Think I did so from the readers responses. I also must, must, must, bring the surreal into a story, so it grabs you.
It took me seven months to write this book. Believe it was due to the fact I had the story running in my head for years. Funny, the sequel took over two years.
What inspires me? Truthfully, the need to communicate, be it through the radio broadcast or through writing, for communication opens the heart, the mind and eyes. Life would be dull if we didn't think and I want everyone to look at both sides, then they can make an intelligent decision.
I'm also inspired by beauty of nature, goodness of people and kindness of heart.
I thoroughly enjoyed Monica's interview and her giving us an understanding of her writing process. Congrats to Monica, and much success on her career!
