Featuring the Documentary 'Let Them Eat Cake'

Film Synopsis

“Let Them Eat Cake” is not your typical documentary. It is a poetic essay that takes its audience on a journey through twelve countries, exploring the contrast between pastry making and consumption in various parts of the world. While in some parts of the world those who farm the ingredients for pastries can’t even afford them, in Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles, lavish pastries adorn the shelves of pastry shops along the streets. Written and directed by award-winning director Alexis Krasilovsky, “Let Them Eat Cake” addresses the planetary emergency of too little food, while seducing the viewer with the lavish traditions and beauty of pastry and cake-making that call us back to the roots of our childhood. The film is now available on VOD and DVD. Visit the "Buy Film Now" tab at www.pastriology.com for more information.

 Bio of Alexis Krasilovsky
Writer/Director/Co-Producer of Let Them Eat Cake, is the winner of a lifetime achievement award from the 2011 Gdansk DocFilm Festival and the Tribute Award “for achievements in independent cinema” from the 2008 San Francisco Women’s Film Festival. Her films, videos and holograms includeWomen Behind the Camera (and the TV version, Shooting Women) -- winner of five "Best Documentary" awards; End of the Art World, starring Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg; Just Between Me & God, shown nationally on The Learning Channel’s series, “The Independents”; Exile, filmed in Czechoslovakia before the fall of the Iron Curtain and aired nationally on PBS; and Childbirth Dream, a 35mm hologram exhibited in the Georges Pompidou Center (Paris). Krasilovsky studied film history at Yale and received an MFA in Film/Video from CalArts. Krasilovsky, who lives in Los Angeles, is Professor of film studies and screenwriting at California State University, Northridge, and a member of the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Women Directors.

What motivated you to do this, and what were you trying to get at with the film?

On a personal level, I remember my mother forcing me to eat tasteless, previously frozen peas, which I swallowed one by one, like bitter medicine, while she told me, “Think of the starving children in India.”  That stayed with me, especially in 2001 when I went to Mumbai to film my first global documentary, and found myself surrounded by beggars.  I also remember being a fat kid gorging on pink and white Hostess Snowballs.  My mother compensated for the poverty and neglect of her childhood by giving her children two or three pieces of candy, cookies, pies and cakes every day.  There were special birthday cakes, gingerbread decorating parties at Christmas, and pilgrimages to Brooklyn for crumb cakes from the original Ebinger’s Bakery.
I also remember wanting to put my head in the oven, influenced by Sylvia Plath’s poetry.  Making a film about baking is a better use of an oven in my life, I think.

What are the ethics of directing a global film?

I try to think of myself as a global citizen, rather than as an auteur.  The subjects of the film should come first.  My individual experience is important, but only in the context of other individual experiences.  I try not to dominate with my point of view; I try to listen from behind the camera to others’ perspectives.  For example, Christopher Garumbullo, the son of Rogene Garambullo, a Jicarilla (pronounced “Yih-cah-RIYa”) Apache elder, Unit Directed our interviews shot in New Mexico.  It would have been disrespectful for me to dictate exactly what to shoot.  The very word “shooting” instead of “gathering” footage is something that I question.

Featuring Author LR Hatfield

A Little About My Past

I live and grew up in Kansas. I had grandparents who farmed and grandparents who owned a grocery store and gas station. Both of my parents worked full time, so I spent a lot time with my grandparents. I am very lucky at my age to still have one grandma living. She still drives and lives at home.

My Grandma and Grandpa Spencer, my uncle, my cousin Tricia, and my dad all played instruments. They played Blue Grass. Tricia and her husband have a Blue Grass Band that is really taking off. Very proud of her. I loved to listen to them play growing up. Especially when my uncle would add in his banjo. I tried to learn to play. I'm a better listener to music, then playing music.

After high school, I went to school, thinking I would be a nurse. I received my Nurse Aide and Medication Aide certifications and began working in nursing homes and with the mentally ill. I quickly discovered, this work was not for me, so back to school I went. I obtained my Account Clerk certification. After obtaining that certification, I have worked in customer service, as a receptionist, and back to the medical field in mental health, medical records, and finally Medicaid. As you can see I can't get away from the medical field.

I love helping others. I think that is why the medical field has always called me back. I know I wasn't cut out to be a nurse, but I figured out I can help the elderly in other ways. After working for the state for 11 years, I left to go to work for a non-profit organization serving the elderly. Currently, I assist the elderly with Medicaid applications. Plus I work with a great bunch of people who make the job fun. Two ladies specifically that hold a special place in my heart. One is a social worker and the other is an RN. They bring me work (Seriously, I love them to death!)

I do have three children that are my lifeline. After having my oldest who is now 14, that is when I decided to go to college and get my degree in Business Management. While going to college, I worked full time and volunteered with the Independent Living Program, assisting young adults exiting foster care into their adult lives. You would think that I would be there to assist and teach them, in reality, those girls taught me a few things about life. They also helped me to discover what I really want to do in life, which is to write and help others. As if I haven't changed my mind enough in life.

My two little ones, keep me on my toes. In August my youngest, will start Kindergarten. Time has definitely flown by. Being a mom is the best job ever for me. I love to watch their imaginations. As I'm writing this, I'm watching my daughter pretend to blow up balloons for a pretend birthday party. This makes me smile.

What Inspired Me to Start Writing

I wrote my first book in 2011 and my Independent Living girls inspired me to write, Adrian Born Under a Falling Star. I just left it on my computer. A friend read my book and said I should get it edited and publish it. I ignored her.

In 2012 when my Grandma Smith's health took a turn for the worse, I decided it was time. This friend of mine and I edited for a few weeks. I thought I was done, then realized I needed a cover. I had no clue what to do for a cover. Thankfully I had another cousin who did photography and she photo shopped a picture of my daughter and made the cover.

I was able to get my first book published a few weeks before my grandma passed away. A week or so before she passed I had started my second book in the series. Gina, Luke, and Mark Secrets Behind the Glitter and Gloss. I found a photo album in my grandma's closet that was perfect for the cover. I snapped a picture on a doily she made and took a chance on the cover. I have to admit, for amateur, I was proud of it. I finished writing that book the week she passed away.

After writing these two books, I kept going. I am now working on my seventh book, Wheat Murders. I am very excited for this book to be released.

What Am I Passionate About?

As I have said, I am passionate about helping others. My ultimate goal, is to donate 10% of my proceeds from my books to organizations. It brings me joy to know that I could have helped someone achieve a dream or put a smile on their face.

Featuring Michele Jennae and Sweet Nexus

I am so happy to finally be featuring my friend Michele Jennae. Sweet Nexus is such a wonderful group for connecting. Not just social media connection or contact, but personal contact. Michele has done a fantastic job of helping all of the women in this group reach out to one another.

Michele's Bio

Michele Jennae is the founder of SWEET Nexus, a Networking Group for Entrepreneurial Women. Ever since she was young the running theme in her life has been her ability to connect people, ideas, and opportunities. It took her a while to recognize this theme, however, and she drifted from job to job, and then business idea to business idea, until she formed SWEET Nexus six months ago.
“It’s relatively young as far as businesses go,” Michele Jennae says, “but the idea is really in slow and steady growth. One misconception of a network is that the power is in the numbers. SWEET Nexus is more about building relationships for a lifetime, and those relationships require an investment of energy and time.”

Michele Jennae encourages her members to join, not necessarily with the intention of making sales, although it most certainly can happen, but to focus on what she calls SWEET Serendipity.
“I am inspired by the idea of serendipity. SWEET Serendipity is all about allowing amazing things to happen in your life – that might otherwise seem coincidental – as a result of the relationships that you develop. You might find a business partner, a travel buddy, a cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on. You might also find that these relationships affect your family and other friends as well. You might get a lead for your husband’s work prospects, or a connection that gets your child into a good college.”

What you will most definitely find in SWEET Nexus is a group of friends. Supportive women who understand where you are at, because they are there too.

SWEET Nexus: Connecting People, Ideas, and Opportunities. Building Relationships for a Lifetime.
We are a membership based organization, with online and offline activities across the United States and into Canada. Benefits of membership include events, showcases, strategic connections, and MORE.
