Featuring Shanikqa Canty

In the short time I have been getting to know Shanikqa, I have watched her truly blossom. She is an inspiration. See what Shanikqa is passionate about below.

Bio

Shanikqa Nicole Canty born on Feb 10th in Brooklyn, New York.

At a very young age I realized that I was different from the other young ladies and I was determined to create my own path. I wanted to do what I really loved to do. Most of my classmates considered me to be the odd one while in elementary and Jr. high. But while in high school I embraced my oddness an used it to my advantage. My ideas were so grand they even surprised my teachers. At 15 years old I was an intern with a Production Company. It was not a long assignment but I became quite knowledgeable and I never thought it would play a vital role in my future. At the age of 22, I am one of the founders of a Entrepreneurship program called S.E.E. Successfully Empowering Entrepreneurs , Vice President of a non profit organization Veterans R M.A.D. Inc and the owner of a new independent international magazine tilted "A Classic-Lifestyle Internationale Magazine" that was launched last month in October.

A Classic-Lifestyle was created to give independents a platform where they can shine and showcase their classiness and to inspire other individuals. Regardless of sexual background , religious beliefs , ethnicity (etc).

As the New Year approaches , bigger things are being prepared for the magazine and I can't wait to share it all.

Featuring Tracey Edges

Tracey Edges is such an inspiration. I have admired her work and what she stands for. Read below to learn about Tracey. What an amazing, passionate person she is!

What am I passionate about?
LOTS of things but I enjoyed having to think about this and think what, out of all the things that I like, am I truly passionate about.
Interesting...
I am a Visual Artist and I paint – I am passionate about painting.
I write short stories and I am passionate about writing.
I have a radio programme and I am passionate about that.
I have tried to ditch one or two of the above but I can’t. I have to accept that I will never have enough hours in the day to do all things, prolifically, all of the time.
I know that now and that is fine – better than not having any of those passions in my life.
Strangely I can look back to my schooldays and see that I wanted to do all of the above, way back then.

I always wanted to write a book. I will do it. I know I will do it. It may only be one book or it may be a whole bookshelf worth. I just know that, to some degree that will happen. It must or I will burst.
I really enjoy writing short stories. I will write some more and put them together in an Anthology. That will probably be my first book. The toe in the water.
I have had a short story published in an anthology. A great one, with great writers (Off The Record – At The Movies). I am still so proud of that. I am also, rather sadly, proud that my story, Memento, has made people cry on every continent (well, maybe not the really cold one – unless any penguins know differently!)
I write constantly but mainly features for my radio show. I also have a column in a magazine, The Peoples, called “Girl About Town”.
I have a continuous story blog called PI GY, as I actually prefer to make people laugh than cry. It is a mixture of fact and fiction. I really enjoy writing that but it is on the back burner until I get my new house sorted out.

The new house is a bit of a disaster and I am not, as yet, passionate about it! Maybe when I get hot water coming out of the taps, a boiler that heats the house and a useable bathroom I may feel differently. I hope so!
PI GY has been recorded as a radio series and I do have plans to turn it into a novel, one day. You can find it here:
www.traceyedges.blogspot.com
Start at “The Beginning” though as it should be read in order.
I always wanted to be an Artist and have exhibitions. The whole idea seemed massively exciting and unattainable – a different world. I have exhibited. I have had solo exhibitions locally and nationally. I am so proud of that. If I never have another one I will die happy. I did it. That’s amazing. I will have more though. I have so many different ideas, to add to the potential bursting, that I must. Artistic splatter only works in a Jackson Pollock context, not in a Tracey Edges bursting one!

I remember having a careers advice session at school and I said that I wanted to do something in radio or TV. I wasn’t looking for glamour or fame, I just found the whole concept interesting and exciting. My careers advisor recommended I went into accountancy or banking. I was useless at maths, those options sounded terribly boring to me and he got paid for that – unbelievable!

I have a weekly, 2 hour, Sunday morning radio show called, Sunday Girl on Siren FM 107.3 and I am very, very passionate about it. I love being able to play indie artists – there is some fantastic talent out there, whether on your own doorstep or the other side of the world. What I really love is talking to, and getting to know, Musicians, Authors and other great people from all over this great planet of ours. Now it is ridiculously easy to communicate, on a global basis, but I suppose I have always enjoyed that.

When I was in junior school I had about 15 pen-friends from Hong Kong, America, France, Iceland, Finland – all over. I used to love receiving their letters and would always be found writing back to them. If I wasn’t writing I would be found with my felt tips and a sketch pad or with my head in a book. I am an only child and was an avid reader before I even started school – you can never be lonely with a book – or a dog.

I am very passionate about my dogs. I have 3 old ladies and I can’t imagine life without any of them. Now 2 of them are 13 it can be a bit scary when they don’t want to wake up in the mornings and my heart is always sinking before springing back into action again for another day of walks and cuddles. The two older ones are rescues and my heart breaks to see so many unwanted and abused animals. The rescue centres do a fantastic job but they really shouldn’t need to be there.

I love dog walks on empty beaches, splashing in the edge of the tide, and the follow up cup of hot cocoa after a crisp, cold winter one. Poppies, lavender and other smelly plants like honeysuckle, jasmine and lilac, red geraniums in terracotta pots and the miracle of a vivid rainbow against a dark grey sky all make me pause and smile. A roaring wood-burner cheers up the most miserable of days add in a cosy blanket, snoring dogs, a good book and some great music playing in the background and I’m happy.

Now there’s an idea...
See you!

Featuring Musician Carlos Wilde

As I have gotten to know Carlos, I have learned he is very passionate about his work. Not only does he hold pride when speaking of his work, you can hear it through his music.

Below is what Carlos Wilde says about himself in his personal bio.

Music and I are eternal lovers. The flow of one note to another (sang and/or played) can touch me in unpredictable ways. At a very tender age I entertained family and friends with my singing. I got up on stage for the first time when I was 6. At the age of 10, I sang in a casino in a variety show. During primary and secondary school I attended singing classes,  was involved in amateur theatre, and school music concerts. I attended guitar lessons for a short while, but I define myself as a self-taught instrumentalist. Then I started with bands, in which some I formed and was part of others mainly as the lead singer/frontman . I have worked with several musicians giving life to various music projects. I have performed live in Portugal, Holland, France, Ireland, and Spain, both at pub/club and concert level. I tend to listen to most genres since I firmly believe that great exponents can be found in each and every one of them. Rock, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Soul,  and many more (the list is endless) have given me many delightful moments. My own path reflects all this.

Description of Carlos Wilde's work

Carlos Wilde is an eclectic and versatile singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composing in a wide range of music genres, and producing his work. Wilde's songs have fared very well at different sites, some reaching #1 in their genres and/or sub-genres. At present you can find samples of his music on ReverbNation, YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook, and MySpace amongst others.
His re-released CD 'Cocktail', available at Bandcamp which  was a runner-up in the IOMA 2005 (International Online Music Awards) for best album and best cover art. This was his first adventure in his Home Studio and counted on some musician friends to collaborate with him – the result was an interesting and appetizing  cocktail of genres – hence the title of the album.
C.Wilde is getting airplay recognition on some College Radio and other radio stations in the UK, Continental Europe, the US, as well as other countries like Australia, New Zealand, etc. Two of his tracks “Staring at the Dark” and “Dreams” from his CD “Cocktail”, were featured in an Arts program on 'Localia TV'. He also has 2 tracks in the 2 compilations released by Atom Sounds (Independent Record Label). Wilde's EP "Not a Tortoise" is available on ReverbNation, SoundCloud and Bandcamp. One of the tracks 'Living on a High' is also available on CD Baby, iTunes and associated music retailers.
These days Carlos Wilde is mainly focused on writing and recording material in his studio. He is currently seeking placement with other artists, Indie Films, Commercials, etc.

Publishing /Licensing – should anyone want to use his music for recording, television, film, advertising, etc. please, do not hesitate to contact him on ReverbNation.
In addition to his music, Carlos donates a percentage of his proceeds to an organization called CARE. This organization helps fight global poverty. The link to the organization is http://www.care.org/.

Featuring Tiki Black

Tiki's Bio

‘The voice is the instrument that draws us in, it can challenge or comfort us, awaken us or lull us, inspire or reassure. Tiki Black has a voice that can do all of this and more… Warm, embracing and timeless’.
Spiral Earth

‘Tiki Black is the perfect poster child for what it means to be a genuine Indie performer . Black’s music speaks to a generation that needs a voice that knows their pain, joy, achievements, failures, and struggles. She sings from the heart, and Black’s music pours out her soul to her listeners… this publication is in love with this artist’s music’.
Junior’s Cave

‘Songs that tug at the heartstrings without ever giving the impression they were written purely to do so’.
Glasswerk

Sometimes an artist emerges with a sound so different that it’s hard to figure out where it came from. Tiki Black is such an enigma, her unique voice and expressive keyboard style having led some to compare her to the poetic, soulful sound of Nina Simone or the narrative lyricism of Leonard Cohen. When you delve a little deeper into her background you realise this was never going to be someone who fitted easily into genre labels.

Born in Paris to Cameroonian parents, family hardship required her to be self-reliant from an early age. Constantly moving around and shifting between both countries, music provided a precious haven of consistency in her life. Tiki treasured the resonance she found in Cameroonian artists such as Manu Dibango and Eboa Lotin, and opened herself to the melancholic beauty of French Chanson, an influence also on the likes of Scott Walker, Terry Hall and Elvis Costello. Furthermore, when at the age of 14 she discovered there was a piano in her new school in Paris, she immersed herself in a musical instruction book donated by a friend and discovered the work of Chopin.

While the upheaval of regularly moving around proved unsettling, it also led her to embrace and explore music as a world beyond borders or boundaries. During a period of her childhood spent in Africa in the port of Douala, she fondly recalls hearing music from far-flung places like Latin and North America and going to watch Bollywood or Chinese films in local cinemas. Later she would reverently translate and study the lyrics of artists as diverse as Caetano Veloso, Bob Marley, Herbert Grönemeyer and John Lennon. As Tiki reflects, ‘If my music starts from personal experiences, it draws more universal lessons by looking across time and place at similar situations and emotions.’

Now resident in Manchester, Tiki’s stunning debut album ‘Out Of The Black’ on NO Sugar addEd Records is a remarkable collection of songs that celebrate both the strength and fragility of the human spirit. Enhanced by a delicate blend of Western and African rhythmic and stringed instruments, the songs and arrangements convey a singer-songwriter who has the ability to frame her music and lyrics in meticulous and intricate detail without ever losing an intense, twilight intimacy with the listener.

Description of Tiki's Work

I see my work as the creative expression and communication of life as we know it, from a perspective we sometimes lose in the height of pain, the depth of loss and the breadth of fear... or just the duty of survival.

I write and perform songs that acknowledge our fragility and strength in order to empower us to evolve beyond that.
My debut album is entitled 'Out Of The Black', using an analogy between a first release and birth to show the miracle of creativity over pain and fear. The arrangement is minimalist, with mainly acoustic piano and voice, to empower the emotion, lifted by delicate strings and worldy percussions. It was critically acclaimed and was shortlisted in Fatea awards for debut albums and won The Akademia award for best album.

To me, a song is more than a melody or rhyme. It can empower us to acknowledge and own life, through its pain and joy, struggles and victories, and even to make it better. My next album will explore this further by looking into the stage of the human cycle that follows birth.

When I am not writing or performing songs, I am presenting a radio show featuring music across time, space and genres and their songwriters. I also write about music for three magazines as my way to say thank you for the music to each and everyone, listeners and musicians alike, who continually make music possible, sustain its legacy and contribute to its magic.
